Five Contingency Awards For Purkhiser After Maiden Victory

By Adam Fenwick – adam@carsprocup.com  - CARS Pro Cup Series Public Relations Director

Mooresville, N.C. — Allen Purkhiser became the latest driver to earn his first CARS Pro Cup Series victory Saturday at Ace Speedway as the South Carolina native won the All-American 250.

Before winning Saturday, Purkhiser had to overcome a heated late-race battle with rookie Nathan Russell. The two went at it for several laps, with Russell hanging to Purkhiser’s outside lap after lap. Finally Purkhiser pulled his No. 68 Chevrolet ahead of Russell, a position he held the rest of the event.

As a result of Purkhiser’s cool demeanor during that late-race battle, he has been named the latest recipient of the Cool Under Pressure Award presented by FLUIDYNE.

Purkhiser also took home four other awards following his victory Saturday, including the Brake of the Race Award presented by Pro-System Brakes, the Staubli Highest Finisher Award and product certificates from Cool Shirt and Brown & Miller.

Driving the No. 36 Chevrolet sponsored by Chick-Fil-A, Harrison Rhodes took home two contingency awards for his performance in the All-American 250.

Rhodes was running in third place on lap 124 when leaders J.P. Morgan and Tyler Young made contact with each other and spun. Rhodes, running third at the time, avoided both drivers and found himself in the lead. That amazing move earned Rhodes the Koolmove of the Race Award presented by Koolmat, as well as the Half Way Leader Award presented by Holley.

Morgan dominated most of the 250-lap event, leading more laps than anyone to take home the Lap Leader Award presented by U-Pull, U-Save. He also earned T&D Rocker Arms High Finisher Award and a product certificate from Cool Shirt.

Third-place finisher Nathan Russell also earned product certificates from Cool Shirt and Brown & Miller.

Schedule Updates: Following the unfortunate postponement of the event at Orange County Speedway May 5, CARS Pro Cup Series officials have made some changes to the 2012 schedule.

Orange County Speedway will now host the final event on the regular season schedule Sept. 1, as well as the final event of the Championship Series Nov. 3. This allows the series to maintain its previously announced 14-race schedule.

In addition, the CARS Pro Cup Series has also filled the final TBA on its schedule. After a strong event at Hickory Motor Speedway in April, the series will return there Oct. 20 for the penultimate event of the Championship Series.
